KALAMAZOO, MI — The construction management firm chosen to oversee Kalamazoo County’s new justice facility is looking begin Phase 1 of construction this summer.
Kalamazoo-based company CSM Group was one of seven to bid on the project in August. Two companies combined bids because of the size and scope of the $90 million project.
The contract with CSM was approved by the Board of Commissioners at its Dec. 3 meeting.
CSM Group’s Kalamazoo Office is located down the road from the work site on West Michigan Avenue, which makes the project more personal, said Jim Feltch, president and chief executive officer at CSM Group. Although the company has offices in Grand Rapids as well, the majority of CSM employees live within Kalamazoo County, Feltch said in a news release.
“As parents, coaches, mentors, volunteers, and employees for organizations, schools, and companies across Kalamazoo County, we are driven by our passion to create a legacy for generations to come,” Feltch said.
The county’s new justice facility will sit next to the county administration building on the lot surrounded by West Kalamazoo Avenue, North Park Street, North Church Street and Eleanor Street.
The building is expected to be five-stories tall and 155,000-square-feet. It will house the county’s courts and other criminal justice-related offices.
The county agreed to a land swap deal with Plaza Corp in March 2017. The local land developer now owns the current courthouse in exchange for the lot that the new justice facility will eventually sit on.
The redevelopment of the northwest part of downtown will complement the company’s investment in a new hotel planned in the Rose Street Market Building and other investments in the area, PlazaCorp Director of Acquisitions and Development Andy Wenzel told MLive previously.
